I have run the Requirements Check to prepare for the install and its given me 2 warnings that I’m concerned about:
1) My host runs MySQL 5.1.68-cll and although its preferential to have 5.5, are there any issues with running on this version? I checked with several other hosters and they are all running the same version. The only way to get 5.5 is to contract dedicated hosting and as a start-up, the cost is out of my budget.
2) I also got the warning about missing recommended Apache modules and that some features may not function properly. This is also due to using a shared hosting service and the answer I got from most support reps is that I would need dedicated hosting to enable the recommended modules.
What potential issues could arise if not having these modules? It may be that its not a big concern depending on how I need to use Event Espresso but I’d like to know what to expect.
Thanks for the answer Dean. That certainly gives me some reassurance as I move forward.
I inquired with my hoster and support told my that upgrading MySQL to 5.5 is on their roadmap for their shared packages. I was going to sign up at Hostgator initially but I had come across a lot of complaints about bad support so I decided against it.
Complaints against Hostgator? Well im sure they have their share, but I (personally) highly recommend them. Only had one issue with them which was when I signed up there was a mix up but since then I found their service very good.
However, there is also Bluehost that comes highly recommended, we just advise against using GoDaddy. Or any IIS (Windows) server.
