payment overview different on paypal return page and email link

I am using Event Espresso Version 3.1.36.4.P
I just did a test on my event registration with paypal payment. After payment, paypal redirect me back to the site with payment overview page which shows that payment status is incomplete:

But when I checked the email which contains a link “view your payment details”, the payment status is completed:

I checked the payment record of both client and receiver side, the transaction is completed. What goes wrong on the very first link back from paypal? Why it said payment status incomplete while it is actually completed?

We’ve found that Paypal’s Instant Payment Notification system is not so instant some of the time. There can be up to a minute delay between the user returning to your site and the IPN message reaching your site to update the payment status. I do have a slight modification you can add to somewhat compensate for this. You would want to copy the folder paypal from plugins/event-espresso/gateways to uploads/espresso/gateways and then apply the changes outlined here: https://gist.github.com/sidharrell/7087307
