Is there a way to integrate interest groups within mailchimp add on? I’d like to add people automatically specific to the type of event they are registering for. I have one list with several different segmented groups.

    Hi Luis,

Do you mean importing individuals to certain MailChimp groups, instead of just a list? If that’s what you mean, then I can tell you we’re working on it. A company called Ivy Cat did some work on it for a client they were working with to allow group integration but we need to do some testing. Want to give it a try?

We’ll try to get a hold of it for you to test. Give us a day or two.

So far, merge tags will not add to list. Once I figured that part out, the form will add registrant to list but not to interest group. I do have “TM” in our naming for the group. I’m going to try to remove that and see what happens.

Yeah, no love on that. Not working properly. People get added, but not to interest group. The API calls in my Mailchimp shows “listInterestGroupings” being made whenever I refresh the event editor, but that’s it. listSubscribe gets initiated once I confirm the subscription.

            Hey Luis,

A few questions about your MailChimp issues:

            1. Can you confirm the version number of the Event Espresso – MailChimp
              Integration plugin that you’re using?
            2. Once you select the MailChimp List, does the Group field populate with the available groups?

            Thanks,
            Eric

Hey Eric, I’m using version 1.1 . The list will populate with groups and I can select the group and save the event with the settings. When I look at API calls in my Mail Chimp Account, I can see the calls being made to listInterestGroupings which I’m assuming is when I can open the event in the event editor. When I do a test registration all that happens is the email gets added to the main list not the grouping. In the API calls in my Mail Chimp after registration I see “list” and “listSubscribe” I don’t know if there should be another API call to add to Grouping, but I’m assuming so.

                    Hey Luis,

Just a quick update: we’ve located and fixed the group add error, but need to add an additional feature and do some testing before it’s done, which should be done within a few days. I’ll keep you posted.

                    Eric

                      Hey Luis,

Just a heads-up; I just emailed you the newest version of the Event Espresso MailChimp plugin, where we’ve fixed the Group subscription. Please try it out and confirm that it’s working for you.

Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions.

Awesome, I can confirm that it is working. So I’m excited about that. Any thoughts on integrating “questions” into the mailchimp merge tags? Such as “City” or “Phone” ?

                          Howdy Luis,

                          > Awesome, I can confirm that it is working. So I’m excited about that.

                          Terrific news!

                          > Any thoughts on integrating “questions” into the mailchimp merge tags? Such as “City” or “Phone” ?

Good question. Truthfully, no, I haven’t any thoughts about this yet.

Our first priority has been to make sure this plugin works flawlessly with MailChimp Lists and Groups and all testing so far, shows that it is working well.

I’d love to hear your feature requests for the MailChimp Event Espresso Integration and I’ll chat about them with EE managers and devs and see what makes sense.

In the meantime, if you’d do me a favor and make a list of any features you’d like to see along with how you’d expect that they work, that would be terrific.

                          Cheers,
                          Eric

I think in terms of features from a event promotion stand point:

                            1. being able to merge questions from registration forms into mail chimp merge tags would be super powerful and helpful. We are currently, with this new update, are adding people into specific mailing groups for yoga workshops in different cities. So from a registration stand point having info such as phone number, city and whatever important info that we may ask for that person in that area and having that carry over from EE to Mail Chimp would be super cool IMO.

That’s so far what I can see as a possible feature.

                            Thanks.

                              Thanks Luis,

That’s exactly what I was hoping for from you.

So, may sound silly, but I’m a bit unclear on exactly what value do you get out of having this additional contact info in MailChimp?

                              1. Are you using the additional info in campaign merge fields, or
                              2. Are you using the MailChimp list as your registration list?

I ask for a few reasons, most easily explained by a story . . .

We had a customer that wanted everyone who signed up for her site to automatically be added to a MailChimp mailing list. So, we tied the site into her list, but had to debate with her about enabling/disabling the double-opt-in (she wanted no opt-in), which, even if it’s a membership site, is probably not a great idea; you have to give people the power to unsubscribe.

So, we made that happen, despite our warnings, and her one compromise was to allow us to put a checkbox that showed that they’d opted into receiving email from the site. Of course, she insisted that it was checked on page load.

After all was up and running, the customer complained that the folks that unchecked the box that opted them into the list weren’t pushed over to MailChimp at all. She wanted them in the mailing list, but not subscribed to groups, thinking she’d be using MailChimp as a bit contact manager.

Aside from the fact that this violates MailChimp’s TOS, the other problem is that people can always opt-out, and drop out of the MailChimp group. Event Espresso should always have all of the registrant’s contact info and any special question groups you had them complete, but if you push all of the additional info over to MailChimp just to have it there, you risk losing that contact if they opt out.

If, on the other hand, you’re leveraging the custom question groups in MailChimp campaign merge fields, I can totally see the value.

It’s not a quick, easy addition to the plugin, though, so we’ll talk it over and see if/when we may add it.

                              Cheers,
                              Eric
