This can be done by adding a featured image to your event…

featured image

…and then modifying your event_list_display.php (and/or your registration_page_display.php if you want it to be automagically added to the event reg pages, too) by adding this somewhere in the template:

 <img src="<?php echo do_shortcode('[EE_META type="event_meta" name="event_thumbnail_url"]'); ?>" />

Chris (or anyone else) –

We were holding off on customizing the template out of fear that upgrades later on to Event Espresso would overwrite our changes. Care to elaborate?

If upgrades do not replace theme files for the event pages, then this is a whole different level of customization we’re able to apply to the website. I would very much like to learn more.

Hi William,

Chris wrote up some documentation on where to copy modified templates so that they don’t get overwritten on an update:
