I can see you said:

Edit your shopping_cart.php file and add a button (or whatever you want) that links back to your event registration page.

but I don’t know what to add to do that or where on the page to put it! And should I copy the modified file into wp-content/uploads/espresso/templates ?

OK I’ve managed to do this but I have no idea whether it will be overridden in any upgrade…

Hi,

Any modifications to the core plugin folder will be lost on a software update:

wp-content/plugins/event-espresso

If your edits are in a different location such as the WP uploads folder, then they will not be lost when you update.
