I have a calendar on one of my WordPress site’s pages. The entire page is, in fact, a calendar; the body of the page looks like this:

[ESPRESSO_CALENDAR]

Anyways, I was wondering if it’s possible to change the way events are denoted on the calendar, in a small way; right now all future events are blue, and all past events are gray. Can I change the colors on any of those, as per a category? My events have categories, I just want the calendar to reflect what category events are in by their color.

Yes, go to Event Espresso > Categories.

There you can specify the color for each category. Take a look at the Theme Settings section of the help documentation: http://staging.eventespresso.com/wiki/calendar/
