Displaying events in a sidebar

I’m trying to display a simple list of upcoming events within the sidebar.php. All I can find are suggestions to use shortcodes for this.

Is there some existing php I can use, or am I getting the concept of how Event Espresso should be used within a theme completely wrong?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Tom,

Why not just use the Event Espresso Upcoming Events Widget? So long as the sidebar has a widget ready area (most do) you can just drag and drop it into there. Its found in WordPress Appearance > Widgets.
