Hello, I have had this issue with 2 of my sites that use EE.
I also brought it up here http://staging.eventespresso.com/topic/payment-not-tracked-as-complete-but-was-complete/. It is obviously a problem when someone shows up and we say “sorry you didn’t pay” but they did. Then accounting is messed as well. We have between 1 and 5% of the transactions which have an error such as this. The highest percent was 10/100 during a busy purchasing time.

On one site I use Paypal, the other is Moneris. I have done things to up my memory limits on both sites, increase site speeds, installed the simple thank you page template, got SSL all set up… I’ve been trying everything I can think of to prevent this issue.

I’m not sure what else I can do to avoid this, any ideas would be appreciated.

Sorry and for scale, one site has had 150 transactions since it was installed this year and the other 30,000 this year. 1-5% fail rate can be significant.

        Hi Trevor,

Unfortunately if this is a case where the network traffic is slow at the time the IPN gets sent and the automatic payment update feature in Event Espresso doesn’t get pinged to update the payment status by the payment gateway I’m afraid there isn’t much we can do.

If this is a case where someone added both a free event and a paid event to their cart, then this fix may help:

Have you checked through the IPN logs to see if the payment gateway sent a payment notification to the site at the times where a payment was made but it wasn’t automatically updated? This information may help provide clues.

Sorry where would I find the logs?

The logs are in uploads/espresso/logs/. If the paypal IPN message is lagging behind the return of the user to the site, then this may help: https://gist.github.com/sidharrell/7087307

Sorry, how can I tell from the logs if the IPN message is lagging. I’m not sure I understand how to read this log file. I do see though in this instance there is no IPN response from the gateway server tracked.

            I did see this though
Errors resulting from the execution of curl transfer: Unknown SSL protocol error in connection to http://www.paypal.com:443 – FAIL: IPN Validation Failed . /cgi-bin/webscr : http://www.paypal.com

You can determine if it’s a case where it’s lagging by running a test registration and note the exact time you reach the Thank you page from returning from PayPal and compare it to the time stamp in the IPN log.

If the IPN record isn’t there at all for the affected transactions, then the solution may be the one outlined here:

              http://staging.eventespresso.com/topic/paypal-ipn-not-being-received-by-event-espresso-new-thread/#post-72046

If the “Unknown SSL protocol” error appears in an earlier entry in the log that may have been something that has been resolved or you would not see any successful IPN records.

But if this is only a problem 5% of the time how can a test be conclusive?

I get the same issue with Moneris too on a different site. Including a recent transaction that tracked as complete in both systems but the payment gateway is missing under “type” which typically denotes if an admin added it or if it want through a gateway.

The 5% may be 100% of the registrations that selected a free event in the cart before a paid registration, in which case this is your solution:
