Category shortcode on page with parent page

This is a strange one.

When i use the category shortcode in any page with no parent page it works fine. when I select a parent page to the exact same page with same content that worked a second ago, the page suddenly displays an error:

Page Not Found
“Sorry, Nothing was Found
Apologies, but the page you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help.”

please advise

I’m not able to reproduce this on a test install. There may be another plugin in the mix that might be creating an issue. Another possibility that I’d look into would be a permalink setting/.htaccess issue. You could try resetting the WordPress permalink settings.

I have turned plugins, it doesn’t fix it.

and i’m not sure what to look for in htaccess or permalinks

Go into the permalinks settings in the WordPress settings menu. Then re-save the permalinks settings.

Which version of Event Espresso do you have installed right now?

We are using Version 3.1.24.3.P

I went to the permalinks settings and changed it to the default and saved. this now shows a 404 error page (the hosting company one).
then i switched back to /%postname%/ and the page went back to the Page not found as before. (it says page not found but inside my website, with my template around it)

That might be a problem with your WordPress installation or possibly the .htaccess file. If a sub or child page that does not have an Event Espresso shortcode on it is also 404ing, then this isn’t an Event Espresso issue. If that’s the case, you might be able to get some help with the permalinks issue in the wordpress.org support forums. Here is one thread where the resolution for some involved a work around with a custom post type slug: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/page-not-found-for-specific-slug-sub-pages

oddly enough this only happens when /events/ is the parent page.
I didn’t figure out how to solve the problem (looks like a permalink issue), but for now just revised the parent page’s url. good enough for now…

If you’re using the custom post types feature, the custom post type slug is /events/, so that would explain it.
