I have solved this, but wanted to post this for communal knowledge.

In espresso-members/my_events_page.php it searches for events based on user ID instead of user email (which is equally unique). So I just switched the variables to $current_user->user_email instead of $current_user->ID in the SQL, lines 53 and 59.

53 should be changed to this:

$wpdb->get_results("SELECT id FROM ". EVENTS_ATTENDEE_TABLE . " WHERE email = '" . $current_user->user_email . "'");

and the SQL starting on 55 should include a.email and end with a WHERE statement:

WHERE a.email = '" . $current_user->user_email . "'");
