1) Are events CPTs and just hidden? (I’m wanting to use a featured post widget to display them because the widget that comes with the free version is too basic… hoping I can just make the CPT publicly avail).
2) Does EE not support a featured image on the event? (see #1 as for why)

If not in the free version I’m wondering are these supported in the pro version? I tried on the demo site to create an event with the CPT thing but it didn’t seem to work… I’d be happy to but the pro/dev version if I knew it actually supported these things… Also is frustrating that the documentation for this sort of stuff is blocked pre-sale…

Hi Jon,
The custom post type feature is included with the paid version, and is turned off by default. There’s a setting that enables this, and we include some starter/example templates that display espresso event posts (that’s the post type it registers). These templates are designed to be copied over to the WP theme.

The templates do not currently have featured images, but they can be customized to display them. There is a featured image uploader in the paid version that adds featured images to the calendar, so the templates (or the native event lists) could be adapted to display the featured images.
